A little Natural History

Here I sit awaiting the first ‘real’ snow since my arrival.  They are predicting NYC will see anywhere between 3 and 6 inches tonight – but it’s supposed to warm up tomorrow so it will probably be a slushy mess in the late morning and gone by tomorrow evening!!  But, it will probably be pretty first thing in the morning!

Jordan had to work today so I decided to pay a visit to the Natural History Museum.  It’s up on the Upper West Side near Central Park at 81st street so I headed out about 9 a.m. on my trek involving 3 different subway lines to get there.   I had reservations at 10:30 to see a 3-D IMAX film about birds migrating around the world and it was really, really good.  I just kept thinking, “How the heck did they get these pictures?”  After that, I had reservations at the Butterfly Conservatory!

They have an exhibit that you can walk through that houses 500 butterflies of different types, flying freely all throughout the exhibit.  Sometimes they land on people but most of the time they just hang out on the plants or flutter around looking beautiful.  It was very interesting.   It reminded me of an exhibit of spiders!! that they had at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles a few years ago.  I took Jordan to that – she was not amused!! – but she did say she wants to go to see the butterflies so we will probably go back Monday.

I walked through some of the exhibits but the place is truly massive.  It will definitely require a return visit.  After I left, the weather was still quite pleasant – although a bit brisk – so I decided to walk through Central Park with the intent of grabbing a subway around 59th and going home.  As it turned out, I just walked all the way home which is about a 3 mile hike.  I figured that would partially make up for not hitting the gym this morning!  But now that I am home, I think I’m settled in for the night as its looking more and more ominous outside!  Time to just hunker down and watch the snow fall!

  1. Mike, this is Stewart. Sounds like you’re behaving yourself. I will be starting my road trip on Monday March 5th. I’ve been a little nervous – wondering why I’m doing this. Other times I feel excited and great about the trip! Hopefully, I will be visiting you in Montana in about 3 months! You can follow me at 48states.blog. Take care my friend. Stewart
