I am not going to be writing for a week or so.  My daughter, Jordan, will be visiting for the next week and my brain cells will be pleasantly occupied with her rather than lamenting about the flood of major issues facing this country.  That should make everyone happy!!

Since I won’t be writing this week, and today is Father’s Day, I thought I would change gears a little and write about that.   There are a couple of stories concerning the beginning of Father’s Day.  In one account, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 and was prompted after a woman listened to a sermon about Mother’s Day and figured that fathers deserved similar honoring.   In the second account, the first Father’s Day was celebrated July 5th, 1908 when a woman thought it appropriate to honor all of the fathers who were killed in a major mine explosion.  Perhaps they are both true but it doesn’t really matter.  Father’s Day has been around for more than 100 years.

Father’s Day was picked up and is celebrated at various times of the year around the world.  The following is a list of when Father’s Day is celebrated in various countries.

  • March 14– Iran
  • March 19– Bolivia, Honduras, Italy, Lichtenstein, Portugal, Spain
  • May 8– South Korea
  • First Sunday in June– Lithuania
  • Second Sunday in June– Austria, Ecuador, Belgium
  • Third Sunday in June– Antigua, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Saint Vincent, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Trinidad, Turkey, United Kingdom, Venezuela, Zimbabwe
  • June 17– El Salvador, Guatemala
  • June 23– Nicaragua, Poland, Uganda
  • Second Sunday in July– Uruguay
  • Last Sunday in July– Dominican Republic
  • Second Sunday in August– Brazil
  • August 8– Taiwan, China
  • August 24– Argentina
  • First Sunday in September– Australia, New Zealand
  • New Moon of September– Nepal
  • First Sunday in October– Luxembourg
  • Second Sunday in November– Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden
  • December 5– Thailand

Like so many things in our world today, Father’s Day has become a huge commercial undertaking for many businesses.   Father’s Day sales abound for all kinds of things:  tools, BBQ equipment, ties, etc., etc.  That’s all fine and good, but for me, in some ways, the celebration is a bit turned around.

I can’t speak for all fathers, but for me, Father’s Day, is really a time for me to reflect on how lucky I am to be a father.   There was a time in my life when I couldn’t imagine being a father.  I suppose part of that is my own family background but, whatever the reason, fatherhood just wasn’t in the life plan.   Little did I realize how much joy the adventure of fatherhood could bring.

As we all know, there is no manual that comes with a child.  Most parents, in general, try to do the best they can with what they have.  I have never claimed to be the best father and I certainly have my flaws.  But in spite of all of my flaws and the mistakes I’ve made, I am beyond privileged to be a father to my daughter who has grown into an amazing young woman.

A lot of us go through life chasing more money, promotions, big houses, fancy cars, and lots of things.  The fact is, if you are father to a child or children who turn out to be happy, respectful, and caring people, you are a rich person.  And I include myself in that category.

Today is Father’s Day.  I am a father.  And for that, I am forever grateful.  It’s by far the most challenging and the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.

Happy Father’s Day!

I watched some of the Jan. 6 hearings yesterday and, once again, I don’t know how anyone can watch these hearings without getting a chill down their spine about how close the United States of America, the former beacon of democracy, came to having a coup on our own soil.  The pressure former President Trump put on Vice President Mike Pence to do something that almost all of his close advisors told him was illegal was staggering, and unprecedented in American history.  It is just another example of how Trump and his acolytes clearly do not understand, nor care about, the U.S. Constitution, and how they clearly do not think through the long-term consequences of their decisions.

If John Eastman’s theory about the power vested in the Vice President was true, it begs the question why, during the 2000 election, Al Gore, then the sitting vice president, didn’t just reject the slate of electors from Florida, since the vote outcome was clearly in dispute, and have the Democratic Party of the state simply submit another set of electors which favored Gore and declare himself the winner.  Same thing.  How many of the Republicans who are currently kissing Trump’s butt and continuing to propagate the ‘Big Lie’ of widespread election fraud, would have accepted that?  Even someone with the IQ of a brick could answer that question – zero!!  The Republicans would have gone apoplectic.

Or fast forward to the election of 2024.  Who is the sitting Vice President?  Kamala Harris.  Do you think there is any chance in hell that the same morons who continue to insist that Mike Pence had the power to overturn the results of the 2020 election would agree that Kamala Harris has that same power to determine the outcome of the 2024 election?  I can only imagine the twisted arguments and rational that these same people would offer as to why Kamala Harris does not have that same power.

There would be those who resurrect the argument that Kamala Harris is not even a legitimate citizen of the United States so she is an illegitimate Vice President and, hence does not have the same standing and power as Mike Pence.  Questions of Kamala Harris’ citizenship and eligibility to hold her office have long since been put to bed but they would certainly resurface amongst the right-wing media and Trump toadies.

Perhaps the misogynistic organization like the Proud Boys would offer up the theory that since there were no ‘founding women’ amongst the ‘founding fathers’, the framers of our Constitution never intended that-women hold governmental offices so the 19th Amendment granting vote rights to women is itself unconstitutional, i.e., Vice President Kamala Harris has no power because she holds the office illegitimately.  Think that’s far-fetched?  If so, you haven’t been paying attention to all of the whack-a-doodle theories floating around out there.

More than likely, the argument that would gain the most traction amongst the Trump faithful would be that since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were not legitimately elected due to the fact that the election was ‘stolen’, Vice President Kamala Harris does not have the same rights and power as were (wrongly) conferred to Mike Pence.

Whatever the rational, it is a one hundred percent guarantee that the very same Republicans who were screaming to ‘hang Mike Pence’ because he ‘failed to do his duty’ as Vice President to overturn the results of the 2020 election in favor of Trump, would be once again rioting in the streets if Kamala Harris were to reject slates of electors in 2024 in an effort to ensure a Democratic victory.

The fact that there was so much pressure on Mike Pence to tamper with/reject the certified slates of certified electors submitted by the various states, coupled with the ongoing activities of Republicans in many states to elect and install election officials who buy in to the Big Lie, is a very, very strong argument to rid ourselves of the Electoral College once and for all.   In two very recent elections, the winner of the popular vote, lost the election due to the vagaries of the Electoral College:  Bush v. Gore; Trump v. Clinton.

The way things are going, it doesn’t appear that there is much danger of widespread voter fraud in future elections, but it appears there is an increasing probability of meddling with the slates of electors that are ultimately responsible for deciding presidential elections.  That was tried in the last election and barely failed.  I would not be so confident that we will be so lucky in the next presidential election.  It is time to do away with the Electoral College and just let the popular vote speak for itself.  I don’t believe any other country has a system like this and it has clearly outlived its usefulness.  Not only is it an anachronism but it is becoming the tool of choice to undermine the very foundations of democracy in this country.

According to Merriam-Webster, ‘alchemy’ is: “a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of the base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life.”1

Although alchemy usually refers to efforts to turn base metals into gold, there are numerous stories throughout history of ‘people’ trying to turn various things into gold.  One of the more famous is that of Rumpelstiltskin who spun straw into gold in exchange for the firstborn child of the future queen.  Rumpelstiltskin’s plot did not end well for him.  The queen ended up keeping her child and Rumpelstiltskin died!  Too bad – the end!

Unfortunately, today we are faced with a different kind of alchemy and a host of charlatans who practice it.  Today’s alchemy is the ability to turn bullshit into gold.  Some of the most famous and successful practitioners of this ‘art’ today are: Alex Jones (founder of Infowars), Tucker Carlson (Fox News TV personality) and Donald J. Trump (former President of the United States).  These people make Rumpelstiltskin look like a complete amateur.

Alex Jones, as some may know, has been pedaling various kinds of bullshit for years.  He famously and loudly proclaimed the shootings hook at Sandy Hook Elementary school where 26 people were massacred, was a hoax.  There was zero evidence to back up this claim and he knew it was a false claim and yet he made it anyway.  It was pure, unadulterated bullshit.  And why does Alex Jones propagate these types of outrageous conspiracy theories – to turn bullshit into gold.

The formula is basically very simple.  You put something outrageous out there on line – you know like the headlines you see routinely in the tabloids at the checkout lines at the market – “Michael Jackson was really an alien from Planet Melmac” (remember ALF?), and if it is outrageous enough to get people to click on it – it becomes gold!!  It doesn’t have to be true, it’s just got to suck people in.  Once he started to build his ‘brand’, then he was able to start selling merchandise, etc. and the bullshit turns into even more gold.

Jones has been banned from most major social media platforms over his outlandish conspiracy theories and racist remarks, but he still has a following.  He lost a court battle with some of the Sandy Hook parents and was ordered to pay a judgment – which then triggered him to file bankruptcy.   I would bet huge sums of money that Alex Jones doesn’t believe a fraction of the stuff he throws out there.  But he is astute enough to understand the modern-day version of alchemy – bullshit into gold – and it has made him a wealthy man.

Tucker Carlson and some of his colleagues at Fox News are in the same business.  They are not journalists, nor do they claim to be, although many in their audience mistake them for being journalists.  They are no more than carnival barkers or a dressed-up version of Rumpelstiltskin.  They are willing to sell the soul of America to the devil if the crap they spew on television allows them to line their pockets and that of the Murdoch family.  You can dress it up, put a suit on it and have a slick television set but it’s still alchemy – turning bullshit into gold.

And, of course, there is one of the best modern-day alchemists, Donald J. Trump.  His entire career has been about turning bullshit into gold.  He is a provably terrible businessman who has filed for bankruptcy multiple times, and has run several businesses into the ground.  How many of us have flown on Trump Airlines – ever?  However, he keeps shoveling it and so far, it keeps turning into gold.  Someone didn’t coin the name, “Trumpelstiltskin” for no reason!

As I pointed out yesterday, after he legitimately lost the election (and was told by those closest to him that he lost), he managed to score over $250 million with nothing but a shovel and a barnyard of bullshit.  The dictionary says that alchemy is a ‘medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy…’.  I would argue that they should strike the word ‘medieval.’  As far as I can tell, alchemy is alive and well and stronger than ever today.

And for my money, the purveyors of this kind of bullshit for the purpose of making money, stink more than the guys who are actually shoveling real cow shit at the stockyards!  At least that’s honest work!

June 14, 2022

I had the TV on yesterday for the Jan. 6th hearings while I was doing some other work.  What struck me while and after listening to the witnesses that testified, most of whom were part of Trump’s inner circle, was the fact that Trump is either one of the greatest con artists of all time or he is completely detached from reality.  In either case, he is not qualified to be President of the United States.

Virtually all of the witnesses testified that Trump was informed multiple times by multiple people that there was absolutely no evidence to substantiate the claims of ‘widespread’ voter fraud that would result in overturning the election. And yet, he continued then and continues now to propagate this myth that the ‘election was stolen.’  And sadly, millions of people believe him.

In a way, I feel for some of these people because, as a result of these ongoing claims of widespread voter fraud, Trump has raised over $250 million to ostensibly fund efforts to prove voter fraud where none exists.  In my opinion, this money has been stolen from most of these people under false pretenses.  On the one hand, I guess I should just think that if these people are dumb enough to believe this nonsense in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they get what they deserve, i.e., a smaller wallet.   However, I’m sure that a lot of people who really couldn’t afford to squander money on Trump’s myth, did so honestly believing they were doing ‘the right thing.’

As we all recall, there was a whole bunch of people who believed they were doing the right thing when they followed Jim Jones into the jungles of Guyana!  He, like Trump, had nothing but the cult of personality to persuade all of these innocent people to commit suicide.  Trump, so far, has not asked any of his followers to commit suicide (although one of his followers was fatally shot at the Capitol) but, hundreds of his followers have been charged with crimes in relation to the Jan. 6th insurrection.  Some of those people have lost jobs.  Families have been torn apart.   Many more have sent over $250 million to the Bank of Trump!  And, according to the testimony given today, Trump has been told multiple times by those close to him there is not one shred of evidence to back up any of his claims.

The big difference between Jim Jones’ cult and that of Trump is that the damage that Jim Jones did was confined to a few hundred people.  The damage that Trump is doing is potentially undermining the very foundations of democracy upon which this country was built.

Al Gore had a much stronger case to be declared the winner of the 2000 election having won the popular vote by more than 500,000 votes and yet the whole issue was ultimately settled by the Supreme Court when they halted the counting of ballots in Florida which ultimately led to Bush being declared the winner in the Electoral College.  Al Gore could have kept fighting in the arena of public opinion claiming that Bush had won the election by fraud.  However, after the Supreme Court, the highest court in the United States, issued its ruling, Gore stood down and conceded victory to Bush for the good of the country.  It was a contentious but, ultimately peaceful, transfer of power that was adjudicated in the courts.  That is the process that is supposed to be used in the United States of America.

Trump, on the other hand, lost over 60 cases in state and Federal courts and continued then and continues now to not accept those adjudications as correct.  If Trump really cared about the country and ‘making America great again,’ he would do what Al Gore did and just concede.  Unfortunately, as we have all witnessed over the last few years, Trump doesn’t give one whit about America.  He cares only about Trump – period.   If stroking his ego results in the undermining of democracy in America, sobeit.

The hysteria that Trump created due to these provably false claims of widespread voter fraud remind me of when Senator Joseph McCarthy riled up the country by falsely claiming that communists had infiltrated the Federal government, universities, the film industry and almost everywhere else.  Interesting fact:  Roy Cohn, one of Trump’s mentors, served as the chief counsel for Senator McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954.  “Modern historians view his approach during those hearings as dependent on demagogic, reckless and unsubstantiated accusations against political opponents”1 Sound familiar?   A coincidence?  You can draw your own conclusion.

Just for the record, Senator McCarthy was ultimately disgraced and censured by the Senate.  Roy Cohn was ultimately disbarred for unethical conduct and died of complications from AIDS five months later.

The tragedy surrounding the Jim Jones cult and the ‘McCarthyism’ hearings are now mere footnotes in history.  However, the hysteria that Trump caused with his knowingly false propagation of ‘The Big Lie,’ is likely to be much more long-lasting and damaging to this country.  Numerous Republican-controlled State legislatures have passed laws regarding ‘election security’ although there was no problem with election security during the 2020 election.  These laws are designed to limit access to voting under the guise of providing enhanced election security.  Further, many pro-Trump candidates who continue to propagate the Big Lie, are running for political offices that will give them authority over future elections.

While there has been no evidence of wide spread ‘voter fraud’ in the last election, all of the activities currently underway by factions of the GOP and fueled by the Trump-created hysteria at the local, state and Federal level, could well lead to ‘election fraud’ in 2024.  It will only take one state legislature to decide to replace a slate of Electoral College electors that were legitimately voted in by the populace with one that they substitute due to unfounded allegations of voter fraud to completely undermine the very foundations of democracy in this country.

Think it can’t happen?  They already tried it.  Granted they weren’t successful last time, but that’s no guarantee they won’t be successful next time.  Trumpism is our version of Jonestown, McCarthyism or the Salem witch trials.  The country ultimately survived those tragedies.  Let’s hope we survive this one.

So, after countless people have been slaughtered in various mass shootings, the Senate is ready to pat themselves on the back after reaching a ‘bipartisan’ agreement on a piece of gun control legislation.  Before everyone starts jumping up and down and doing the ‘happy dance,’ recognize that the actual text of this legislation has not yet been written.  There will be plenty of time for various factions to weigh in and torpedo this agreement or significantly water it down.

The framework for the bill has provisions for:

  1. Helping states create and implement ‘Red Flag’ laws which are meant to keep guns out of the hands of those who could potentially harm themselves or others.
  2. “Major investments to increase access to mental health and suicide prevention programs; and other support services available in the community, including crisis and trauma intervention and recovery.”1
  3. Closing the ‘boyfriend’ loophole.  Currently, only married people can be restricted from keeping guns if convicted of domestic violence.  [Note: The NRA is against this provision!]
  4. Enhanced review process for those under 21 buying firearms like AR-15s
  5. Clarifying the definition of ‘Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer’
  6. Providing money “to help institute safety measures in and around primary and secondary schools,” while also supporting “school violence prevention efforts” and training for school employees and students.1

This is just the agreed upon framework.  The actual legislation has not been written yet and you can bet huge sums of money that the NRA and other gun lobbyists are already busy at work trying to get some of these things either deleted or watered down to the point where they are meaningless.  Even then, whatever bill emerges from the Congressional sausage maker after all of the lobbyists add their special sauce, still has to be voted on and approved by at least 60 Senators (including 10 Republicans) before it can go to Biden for signature.

If, by some miracle, the framework of the agreement announced is passed without too much bastardization, the real question is, ‘how much impact will this really have on reducing mass shootings?’  I would argue, not very much.  At best, this will be like giving someone Tylenol who is actually suffering from a malignant tumor.

The package left out the major things that are needed to really address this problem.   They left out expanded background checks, a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines and even the reasonable provision to raise the age to purchase an AR-15 style rifle from 18 to 21.

Red flag laws are a good thing and they have proven effective in some states (including Florida!!)  However, they are routinely opposed by the NRA and I suspect that if this provision survives the writing of the actual legislation, it will be so watered down at the national level that is will be of little value. We all know that ANY law that impinges on a person’s right to ‘keep and bear arms,’ will be deemed unconstitutional by the NRA and others.

The need for mental health resources is real and I agree that more funding is required.  It’s unfortunate that it comes as part of ‘gun control’ legislation rather than as part of health care that should be provided to citizens of this country like it is in so many other countries.  The fact is, the large majority of people with mental health problems are not violent, they just need help.  Trying to conflate ‘gun violence’ and mental health does very little to truly address either problem.

Part of the premise is that people will opt to use more readily available mental health resources rather than going to the store and buying an assault rifle.  It could be argued that many people who are mentally ill to the point where they consider mass murder, will be more than likely to skip going to see a mental health professional even if there is one on every corner.  The mere fact that someone is mentally ill, usually also means that they don’t necessarily make rational decisions.

Improvements in school safety are all well and good.  However, from my lily pad, it is simply a distraction from the real issue.  The Senate is basically saying that we are not going to do anything to reduce the number and availability of assault rifles and high-capacity magazines so we are going to turn out schools into fortresses.  No doubt some of the Senators will decide that as part of ‘improving school safety’, they will want to allocate funding to arming and training teachers!

In my admittedly, very cynical opinion, these are all a smoke screen to allow senators to pretend to do something to solve the problem while not actually doing anything meaningful to address the root problem.  I guess I should be thankful that at least something is being discussed, however, we have been down this road before:  Sandy Hook; Parkland; Buffalo; Uvalde; etc., etc., etc.  and, in the end, nothing meaningful ever gets accomplished.  I have little faith that this exercise will do anything other than provide sound bites so the senators can have their egos stroked and their campaign coffers filled.

We should all gird ourselves for many more offerings of ‘prayers and condolences’ to the victims and the families involved in all of the mass shootings to come.  Let’s be honest – there will be many more – until the malignant tumor of gun violence in this country is truly addressed.

June 11, 2022

I thought I’d take a political day off – mostly.  I did read an interesting article yesterday in which someone threw out the radical idea of repealing the Second Amendment, AND replacing it with an amendment that is worded in a way that more accurately reflects the firearms available today.  Admittedly, that is a pretty radical idea and, given the amount of money spent by the NRA and other gun industry players on buying politicians, it would be a highly unlikely happening.  However, it does make a hell of lot of sense (but, then again, when did rational thought play into most political decisions?)

The Second Amendment reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  It doesn’t say anything about the type of weapons, the age at which anyone can own a weapon, the number of weapons, or anything else.  It is extremely vague and, as we all know, that vagueness has allowed people to interpret these words that were ratified to the Constitution in 1791, to allow the ridiculous proliferation of all kinds of weapons into the hands of virtually every Tom, Dick and Harry in the country.

In most instances, people would agree that if you do the same thing over and over again and it doesn’t work, the rational thing to do is to try something else.  The country has been struggling with the interpretation of the Second Amendment for decades and the current interpretation is clearly not doing anything to guarantee citizens the right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ when we can’t even send kids to school, go to the grocery store, go to a mall, or go to a movie theater without the fear of being gunned down.  Perhaps it’s time to try a radical new approach.

As the author of this article pointed out, repealing the Second Amendment does not mean outlawing all guns or the rights of citizens to ‘keep and bear arms.’  The argument is simply that the current verbiage of the Second Amendment needs to be replaced with something that is more reflective of modern times.  Repeal the current Second Amendment and replace it with a new amendment addressing firearms in America – problem solved!   Rationally, it makes perfect sense.  Politically, it’s probably like trying to climb Mt. Everest in a T-shirt, shorts and sneakers.

That’s enough politics for today.  Nine weeks ago, I was laying in a hospital bed, recovering after they ripped open my knee to repair my existing artificial knee.  The recovery continues but I am back on my bicycle, although I am pedaling about 2/3 the speed I used to pedal and my old normal of 20 to 30 miles rides is now more like 10 to 15 miles. I haven’t been able to do any serious climbing yet but I’m sure the strength will come back.   However, I am thankful that I am pedaling at all and I’m hopeful that in a couple of months I will be back to ‘normal.’

I’m also back on my Harley and am gearing up for another long motorcycle trip next month.  I took a test ride down to Big Sky yesterday and it all went well.  I will have to stop and stretch my leg from time to time but I’m looking forward to getting on the road.  I’ll be riding down to Arizona and then across to the LA area.  I can’t say I’m looking forward to riding in the desert or in LA traffic, but I am looking forward to seeing some friends.  The pictures below are from a recent bicycle ride and from my Hog trip to Big Sky last year (it’s just a better picture than the one I took yesterday).

June 10, 2022

Yes, I did watch the hearing on the Jan. 6th events.  Unfortunately, all of the people who should have watched it probably did not.  It is highly unlikely that any ardent members of the Trump Society watched the hearing.   It would be like hoping that members of the Flat Earth Society watched the latest NASA rocket launch.  Their minds are made up, so even a tsunami of facts, videos, and sworn testimony is not going to sway their view of the world, i.e., Trump said the election was stolen, the actions of January 6th were completely justified and were simply a mild protest, and there was no insurrection – therefore it is true!

Although, I was thinking that if I were a Fox News or OAN viewer, I would actually be insulted that those networks seem to think their viewers are incapable of making their own decisions about events like Jan. 6th.  If those networks were confident that their ongoing narratives in support of the ‘Big Lie’ and the attempts to play down the Jan. 6th insurrection would stand up to scrutiny, you would think they would be more than happy to air the Jan. 6th hearings so people could make up their own minds.  It is somewhat ironic that the right-wing media harangues against ‘censorship’ of conservative viewpoints and yet they choose to essentially censor what their viewers are allowed to watch.  Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham and a few other Fox News personalities must believe that they, and they alone are the anointed ones, who are able to interpret what is going on in the world and feed it like pablum to their viewers.  Walter Cronkite must be turning over in his grave.

Besides the filmmaker and the Capitol police officer who testified, I thought the star of the evening was Liz Cheney, the Republican Representative from Wyoming, and the vice chair of the committee.  I will say at the outset that I do not agree with Liz Cheney on many policy issues.  However, she has more balls and integrity than almost the entire slate of Republicans in the House of Representatives (Adam Kitzinger, excepted).  I thought her opening statement was extremely well done and she is clearly not afraid to speak her mind.  She is what the Republican party used to be like before they turned into Trump ass-kissing, amoebas.

It sounds like there will be at least six or seven more hearings throughout June delving into various aspects of the events leading up to and during the January 6th insurrection.  The real question is, “Will most Americans have the stamina or desire to sit through all of them?”  Given that we now live in an instant gratification and ‘SnapChat’ world, you wonder how long it will take before interest begins to wane.  I’m sure some will fall off and follow along on Twitter thinking that the fact that democracy in this country is under serious attack is not an issue worth their time.

One would think that the plague of gun violence blanketing this country, the very real potential that Roe v. Wade will be overturned and with all of the evidence coming to light from these Jan. 6th investigations and hearings, that it would sufficiently galvanize the electorate to vote against Republican candidates who continually block gun control legislation, support overturning Roe v. Wade and continue to propagate the ‘Big Lie’ and down play the events of Jan. 6th – but I am afraid that will not happen.   Political ‘sins’ just don’t seem to be enough to vote people out of office and keep them from getting elected.

It was just announced that Trump’s former Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, who was forced out of office because of a number of ethics investigations, won the Republican primary here in Montana for the newly created House District.  People clearly say one thing and vote completely differently.  The big buzz words up here are things like ‘freedom’, ‘Montana values’, and ‘integrity’, yet Montanans just selected a man who was forced from office for ethical breaches, whose wife’s declared residence is in Santa Barbara, CA, and who lied to investigators about a land deal while he was Secretary of the Interior that would have benefitted himself.  And this is the man that some Montanans believe would be our best representative in Congress?

I wish I could believe that the Jan. 6th hearings would shock the electorate into believing the threat to democracy in this country is very, very real and motivate them to vote accordingly in November.  Unfortunately, based upon what I see going on, I can’t bring myself to believe that.  I think it’s going to be a long, hard, ugly winter.

June 8, 2022

The primary election is over here in Montana and there aren’t really any major surprises.  I guess the biggest ‘surprise’, if you will, is the fact that former Secretary of the Interior under Trump, Ryan Zinke, who was forced from office after a slew of ethics investigations is in a race that is too close to call at the moment.  Of course, his opponent is another Trump acolyte, so for my money, it really doesn’t matter which of them ultimately wins.  I was happy that the Democratic candidate that I voted for, Monica Tramel, won and will face the winner of the Zinke race in November.  I was also pleased to find out that our HOA attorney, Alanah Griffith, won the Democractic nomination for her district for the Montana State legislature.  The real question is whether or not any Democrat stands a snowball’s chance in hell of winning any election in Montana given the increasing crimson color of the state.

Regardless of what happens in the primaries right now, the Democrats face a very steep hill in order to retain control of both the House and the Senate.  One would think that the potential decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, the recent and ongoing spate of mass shootings, and the continuing shocking findings coming from the Jan. 6th committee, would be enough to mobilize voters to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Poll after poll shows that the majority of Americans are not in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade, but one of the primary planks in most Republican campaigns is a promise to overturn Roe v. Wade and ban abortion.  The majority of American want stricter gun laws.  The Republicans continually block any action on gun laws.  Most Americans want to know the truth about what happened on Jan. 6th and yet, most Republicans either continue to propagate ‘The Big Lie’ or just remain silent about the attempted coup in this country.

Why won’t this translate into votes for the Democrats in November?  I think it’s something akin to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  If you recall, Maslow says that people satisfy their needs according to the following priorities:

  1. Physiological (food and clothing)
  2. Safety (job security)
  3. Love and belong needs (friendship)
  4. Esteem
  5. Self-actualization

It is virtually impossible to get people interested in things like ‘Esteem’ and ‘Self-actualization’ when they are struggling to put food on the table.

Unfortunately, given that inflation is at record high levels and gas prices show no sign of coming down any time soon, many Americans are focused on the very first tier of Maslow’s pyramid.    When people are struggling to make ends meet or are seeing their retirement funds depleted due to these circumstances, it is very difficult to get people to focus on things like the ‘robustness of democracy.’

If you try to explain to people that this election in 2022 and, subsequently in 2024, are really about the future of democracy in this country, they will just look at you and say that while that may be true, they are focused on feeding their family.  They only thing they know is that the current situation is not good, so they will be much more likely to vote for a change, even if they may not fully appreciate the consequence of that change.

The economy is making people desperate.  Desperate people are vulnerable to being mislead and manipulated and often make decisions without thinking much about the long-term consequences.  It is the perfect environment for the Republican ‘machine’ to swoop in and grab the reins by promising to fix everything.  In a situation such as we are now in, the ‘promise’ is sufficient even if there is absolutely no substance or concrete plans behind that promise.

If, as expected, the Republicans retake control of the House and the Senate, and assuming the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, the happenings of the next two years are clearly predictable.  Abortion will be banned in most Republican controlled states and there will be further assaults on things like LGBTQ rights and who knows what else.  There will be NO action on any type of gun control.  The Jan. 6th committee will be immediately disbanded and any ongoing investigations killed and buried.  Virtually every action that Biden tries to take will be blocked, the same way Mitch McConnell obstructed Obama.  Further, if there is any opening on the Supreme Court during the final two years of the Biden administration, any nominee offered up by Biden will be blocked, the same way Merrick Garland was never even granted a hearing.  The United States will begin to look more and more like Hungary.

The current situation is the perfect environment to enable the gestation of an authoritarian regime as has been demonstrated repeatedly throughout history.  But Maslow was right, as long as people are focused on the price of gas, it’s virtually impossible to get them to care about democracy – until it’s too late!

Today is the day for primary elections in seven states including Montana.  What is going on here as part of this election cycle, is likely a precursor to what we can expect in November for the midterm elections and, certainly, for the presidential election in 2024.  Two things are very apparent.  First of all, “Big Money” is pouring into little old Montana as a result of the infamous Citizens United v Federal Election Commission Supreme Court decision which allows SuperPACs and corporations to spend virtually unlimited amounts of money on elections.  Secondly, the continuing propagation of ‘The Big Lie’ about the 2020 presidential election is having an affect on the elections in Montana, in spite of the fact that Trump won Montana by 16 points and the Republicans virtually swept all state wide offices.   There has been a lot of focus on the plague of gun violence as a threat to our country of late, but I would argue that ‘Big Money’ and ‘The Big Lie’ are a far bigger threat to our country and our democracy than the insidious gun violence.

It is very clear that Ryan Zinke, the former Secretary of the Interior, under Trump who was forced from office after numerous ethics investigations is being backed by a lot of Republican dollars coming from somewhere.  He is clearly outspending his Republican challengers on media buys in the hopes of flooding the airways and essentially buying this election.  In the short time I have been writing this, there have been no less than four televised ads touting Ryan Zinke for the Republican nomination for the newly created House seat in Montana.   This has been a daily occurrence for at least for the last two or three weeks. And remember, this is just the primary.  One can only imagine what will happen come November.

The precedent is well established here in Montana.  Our current Republican governor, Greg Gianforte, our junior senator, Steve Daines (Rep), and our existing House Representative, Matt Rosendale (Rep) are all people who are not native Montanans, who moved here with large political dollar backing and used that to win elections.  I would argue that the Citizens United decision was a huge factor in the success of all of these individuals and will, no doubt, be a big factor if Ryan Zinke wins.

As I stated, Trump won Montana by 16 points and the Republicans virtually swept the ticket on statewide offices in the last election.  And yet, there has been a contingent of Republicans in the state legislature who have been beating the drum about election security ever since the 2020 elections.  There has been ZERO evidence of any voter fraud in Montana at all but the Republican-controlled legislature passed a number of laws about ‘election security’ which basically made it more difficult for people to vote.

In this morning’s paper, there is an article with the headline, “State election officials increasing security for primary.”   The lead paragraph reads, “Frustrated county election administrators in Montana are increasing security for Tuesday’s primary election while the state’s commissioner of political practices says misinformation about election security is eroding people’s faith in democracy.”  No shit!  That is exactly the purpose behind ‘The Big Lie.’  And it’s obviously working!!  That should scare the crap out of everyone.

Election officials here are increasing the presence of law enforcement personnel around polling places, hiring private security guards and installing cameras at some locations.  This is unprecedented, particularly in a bright red state like Montana. Unfortunately, this is all part of the long game leading up to the 2024 elections.  This is not an accident.  This is by design.

The more distrust that Republicans can instill about the election process, the easier it will be to actually accomplish some of the things they discussed and tried in a kind of half-assed manner in 2020.  You remember – create a narrative so that if the ‘preferred’, i.e., Republican candidate doesn’t win, the state-controlled Republican legislature will be able to simply override the will of the electorate because of ‘election fraud’, and put forward their own slate of electors for the Electoral College.  That’s the plan and everything that is going on now is simply laying the groundwork for that to happen.

Right now, American democracy is kind of like the frog that is placed in a pot of cold water on the stove.  The stove is turned on and the water starts to heat very slowly so the frog is perfectly content to just swim around in ignorant bliss.  Sooner or later, the water gets so hot that the frog realizes something is wrong and begins to panic, but by that time, it is too late and eventually the frog dies in the boiling water.  That is exactly what is happening to our democracy.  And if you think that’s not true, I suggest the following article:

That’s how I see it from my lily pad.  Ribbit!  Ribbit!

June 6, 2022

I’m a little late today so there won’t me much from me.  However, I read the following article this morning and I found it to be one of the most cogent arguments for banning assault rifles that I have ever read.  I have included it in its entirety.

“Michael Fanone is a CNN law enforcement analyst who served for 20 years with the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department. The views expressed here are his own. Read more opinion at CNN.

(CNN)No weapon has been more in the public eye in America of late than the AR-15, in large part because of its tragic role in some of this country’s deadliest shootings.

The AR-15 has the dubious distinction of being America’s most popular semi-automatic rifle. I’m more familiar with the gun than most people: I own one. And one thing I know for sure is that this weapon doesn’t belong in the hands of the average civilian.

I’ve owned multiple firearms for most of my life. I spent two decades in the Washington Metropolitan Police Department in a number of different roles, as a street cop walking the beat and on various special mission units.

I’m also a card-carrying member of the National Rifle Association. And when I wasn’t at my job doing police work, I worked part-time for several years in firearm sales as well as training law enforcement officers, members of the military and civilians.

I purchased my different guns over the years for the same reason that you might purchase a flathead screwdriver along with a Phillips screwdriver: Each one serves a different purpose. As an avid hunter, I’ve got a gun that I use for turkey hunting, one that I use for waterfowl and one I use to hunt deer and larger game like elk.

I purchased my AR-15 because I was assigned one as part of my police duties. But officers weren’t allowed to take our department-issued weapons home. I felt it was my responsibility to become proficient with any weapon I’d been assigned, so I bought one. And I’ve spent hundreds of hours training so that I could properly use it.

I’ve sold guns at big box retailers and I’ve also sold firearms at a small retail gun store. Some gun buyers have been misled into thinking that the AR-15 is somehow practical for self-defense. But frankly, it’s the last gun that I would recommend for that purpose.

Usually, the motivation for purchasing the AR-15 is simple: People want one because they want one. Most times, the person who buys an AR-15 comes into the store already knowing that they intend to purchase one.

I’ve pressed some customers about why they want an AR-15, but no one could ever come up with a legitimate justification for needing that particular weapon.

Some members of the tinfoil hat brigade have come up with the reply, “We need these weapons because we want to be effective against the government if it becomes tyrannical. That’s part of our Second Amendment right.” Personally, I think that’s ludicrous, but it has become an increasingly popular justification for purchasing a semi-automatic rifle.

The AR-15 was given to law enforcement because more and more frequently police officers were encountering these types of weapons on the street and finding that they were outgunned. One example that springs to mind is the famous 1997 North Hollywood, California, shootout at the Bank of America.

In that incident, two individuals clad in body armor held up a bank in the Los Angeles neighborhood. Police who responded at the scene literally had to run to a nearby gun store to purchase more powerful weapons, because they were using 9 mm pistols, while the bad guys were armed with semi-automatic rifles.

The standoff was one of the most infamous gun battles in American history, with 11 officers wounded — luckily, none fatally — and both robbery suspects shot dead. While it’s an extreme example, it is in many ways the situation encountered by officers all across this country: Police simply are outgunned against semi- and fully automatic firearms.

The bullet that comes out of the barrel of an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle can easily penetrate the target — the intruder or whatever person you are using deadly force to defend yourself or others from.

But it also will go through the wall behind that person, and potentially through that room and into the next wall. That power and accuracy are useful for military purposes, which is obviously what they were designed for. But it’s far more power than should ever be in the hands of the average civilian.

The bullet fired by the AR-15 is capable of defeating the average police officer’s body armor, like a knife slicing through butter. SWAT teams and some of the more specialized units typically are equipped with level IV Kevlar or steel-plated armor, which would stop maybe two or three direct hits, but eventually body armor breaks down after being hit with multiple rounds.

A person wielding an AR-15 has a range beyond 300 yards. For an officer armed with a 9 mm pistol, hitting a target beyond 50 yards is going to be difficult, even for the most accomplished marksman. A bullet fired by an AR-15 travels at three times the velocity as one fired by a 9 mm handgun. And magazines that can feed dozens of rounds into the weapon in the space of minutes clearly were meant for use only on the battlefield.

The prevalence of these weapons means police sometimes are overmatched, as we saw with the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, last month. In a situation where you have small children near the shooter, you want to remove the threat as quickly as possible.

But we all saw the tragic consequences at that elementary school, where police waited for more than an hour before engaging with the teenage gunman armed with an AR-15 who killed 19 young children and two teachers.

I have no doubt that police in Uvalde wish they had had weapons as powerful as the one carried by the shooter who snuffed out the lives of the victims in that school. But a far better outcome would have been if the shooter didn’t have an AR-15 in the first place.

Now that I’m no longer on the police force, my AR-15 collects dust in my gun safe. Rifle ranges that permit the type of training required to use this weapon system effectively are few and far between and the cost of ammunition exceeding a dollar per round is more than this guy can afford. I no longer need it. But neither, to be honest, do most of the people flocking to guns stores to buy one.

Banning these powerful weapons from the civilian marketplace is a no-brainer, as are universal background checks. Neither move is going to solve all the gun problems that we have, but it would be a start.

And outlawing these AR-15s would not require confiscating them from people who already have them. Once you’ve made these weapons illegal, anyone found with one would be subject to arrest, since possession of these weapons would be a crime. I think it’s likely that you would see a lot of people opting to turn them in.

If banning them outright seems like too extreme a solution to be politically palatable, here’s another option: Reclassify semi-automatic rifles as Class 3 firearms.

That would mean that someone wanting to purchase an AR-15 would have to go through a background check, fingerprinting and review by an official from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — a process that takes anywhere from 12 to 16 months. And since Class 3 weapons can’t be purchased by anyone younger than 21, it would solve the issue of emotionally unstable 18-year-olds buying them.

A Class 3 firearm reclassification would also make those who are approved to purchase these weapons subject to an annual check that they are complying with federal regulations regarding secure storage of the firearm, and to confirm their licensing and other paperwork is up to date. All of these hoops and hurdles are sure to reduce the civilian demand for these weapons.

I can’t overstate how dangerous it is to have semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15 in the hands of civilians. Our public officials have it within their power to help make it harder for people who shouldn’t have these weapons to get them.

A police officer should never have to worry about being outgunned by the bad guy they’re protecting the public against.”
