A rookie learns to weld

Learning to weld has always been on my ‘I’d like to learn to do that list’ so when the opportunity presented itself to take a MIG welding class  in Brooklyn, I signed up.   The class took place yesterday and, while it was a bit intense, I learned a lot and, more importantly, I left the shop with all of my appendages intact!!

Welded Cube – A work in progress

The class is taught at a welding shop in Brooklyn which does contract work on various projects during the week.  The instructor was a professional welder who spends the time in his ‘real’ job, working on various constructions and projects primarily for the entertainment industry here in New York.

The whole four hour class was focused on transforming a long piece of 1/8 inch square steel tubing into a welded cube, i.e. cutting, grinding, welding and grinding some more.  It was a lot of work but it was fun and has convinced me I will need some welding equipment in my future shop!!

The cube is currently a work in progress.  The next step is to take the follow-on course in TIG welding and fine finishing which I will do in March.  I’m sure that will be very challenging but the hope is that at the end of that class, my little raw cube will become a nice little piece of art!!  (Although I don’t think it will fit in my suitcase when I leave!!)
