I set out yesterday to visit the Neue Galerie which houses art work from German and Austrian artists. Unfortunately, when I got there, I was informed that a couple of the exhibitions were being worked on and so much of the facility was closed. However, the works of Gustav Klimt, including his famous Lady in Gold, were available for viewing. Admission was free due to the limited exhibitions available to view. So, it was an interesting but very short, visit.
The Neue Galerie is only a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art so I decided to go there. The Met has been called the US version of The Louvre in Paris. It is a massive building that houses art work and artifacts from very ancient times to modern times. And it has collections representing cultures and civilizations all over the world.
Even more amazing, the admission is free!! There are suggested levels of donations but, the fact is, you can walk in the door and pay nothing. That is, however, changing on March 25th. At that time, The Met will begin charging an admission fee of $25 for all non-New York residents. I guess I’d better get all of my exploring done before that time.
As I stated earlier, the place is massive. I spent two hours walking around and never left the first floor of only one wing of the museum. All of the photos below are from this two hour stroll. I don’t see how anyone could take in the entire museum in a single day. It is just too large and there is too much to see. That said, if you are in New York, spending whatever time you have available at The Met is well worth it – at least from my POV.
