The mayor ordered the school system closed for the day and even NYU shut down. And, yes, we did get quite a bit of snow but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. In fact I ventured out Wednesday evening to go to my stone carving class and I made it without getting stuck in a snow bank!
Today it was warm enough that whatever residual snow was still around began to melt and things quickly got back to normal – with a bit of slush here and there! I had to go back to the studio to get some tools and I noticed that there is a New York City Fire Department Museum right around the corner so I decided to stop in. It was quite interesting. They have a really nice collection of old fire engines and memorabilia and, although it’s relatively small, it is worth stop. A lot of people come to New York and visit the World Trade Center memorial, and rightly so, but the NYFD museum has their own small memorial with the pictures of all of the firefighters that were lost in 9/11 and it is quit sobering to see the faces of all of these individuals.
Since I was cooped up most of yesterday watching snow fly outside of my apartment window, I decided to walk home which is about a 2 1/2 mile hike. And, of course, I needed some sustenance for such a journey so I stopped by Dominique Ansel bakery, home of the cronut, which was only a couple of blocks, to pick something up. I got a delicious macadamia nut cookie for the walk home but also picked up a salted caramel éclair for later. I can only say that it’s a good thing that Dominique Ansel bakery is a long way from my apartment!!
I have booked my flight out of NYC for the end of April so the end of my time in The Big Apple is rapidly approaching. There are still things on my ‘to do’ list here so I expect to keep busy exploring right up until I leave. I never thought in a million years that I would live here but have really enjoyed my time here. But soon it will be off to the great house hunt in Montana and we’ll see where that leads.
